{"id":93,"date":"2018-10-31T14:41:17","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T14:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/chemistryphysics\/description-elisante-s-project\/"},"modified":"2018-10-31T14:41:17","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T14:41:17","slug":"description-elisante-s-project","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.conas.sua.ac.tz\/chemistryphysics\/?page_id=93","title":{"rendered":"ASGM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Exploring the Fate of Mercury in Artisanal Gold Mining of Tanzania(ASGM)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This study will investigate quantitative and qualitative<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_(element)\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"> mercury<\/a> availability in the environment surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/international-cooperation\/artisanal-and-small-scale-gold-mining-without-mercury\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining<\/a> (ASGM) locations in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanzania.go.tz\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Tanzania<\/a>, where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_(element)\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">mercury<\/a> contamination is of concern in relation to communities&rsquo; health and those consuming food products originating from the area. Although <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_(element)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mercury<\/a> contamination can be lessened by appropriate control and proper handling methods, measures are not routinely applied in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanzania.go.tz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tanzania<\/a> where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_poisoning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mercury<\/a> has been documented in different environments and studies. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_poisoning\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercury<\/a> can be transported away from emission sources by riverine systems to large water bodies like Lake Victoria. The resulting fish contamination can be significant, as fish are the major protein source in the region and the whole country. In general, atmospheric and riverine processes can transport<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_poisoning\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"> mercury<\/a> to remote environments and foodstuffs<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tanzania.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Tanzania<\/a>, there are very little data on levels of<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Methylmercury\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"> methyl-mercury<\/a> in biota and sediments, and on the contribution that ASGM activities make to these levels. Further, there is little information on the relative importance of riverine and atmospheric processes in transporting <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_poisoning\">mercury<\/a> from sources to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecosystem\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">ecosystems<\/a>. All these fractions ought to be accounted in order to understand the magnitude of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_poisoning\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">mercury<\/a> impacts on the environment and on human beings. The project will develop data on levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_poisoning\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">mercury <\/a>downwind and downstream from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5969110\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">ASGM<\/a> activities in water, suspended particulate matter, sediments, and fish, and improve understanding of spatiotemporal variations of<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_poisoning\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"> mercury<\/a> levels.
