The ICT Commission (ICTC) of Tanzania invited the Department of Informatics and Information Technology (DIIT)<\/a> at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA)<\/a>. The invitation was intended to welcome women and girls to the Women and Youth in ICT Conference, an important event in ICT.<\/p>\n

Two students, Elishukuru Mande and Asmaha Ally, were chosen as representatives accompanied\u00a0by DIIT member\u00a0of staff, Ms. Catherine\u00a0Mangare<\/a>. The event took place\u00a0from October 16th to October 20th, 2023, at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Centre in Dar es Salaam.<\/p>\n

Tanzania Annual ICT Conference 2023, abbreviated as TAIC-2023, was a gathering of industry leaders, experts, and enthusiasts united in their desire to advance ICT in Tanzania. The conference’s topic was “Unleashing emerging digital technologies in the digital transformation for job creation and socio-economic development<\/em>.” This theme emphasizes the importance of ICT in driving innovation, economic growth, and creating opportunities for Tanzania’s youth and women.<\/p>\n

On the 16th and 17th of October, two special events were held prior to the official launch of TAIC-2023. These events celebrated the accomplishments of women and youth in ICT while also addressing the challenges they face. It was an open forum for discussions, experience sharing, and the search for solutions to empower and promote inclusivity in the ICT sector.<\/p>\n

As representatives of the Innovation Hub’s students, Elishukuru Mande and Asmaha Ally participated actively in this conference. They had the honor of presenting their AI-based mobile application for disease classification in tomato leaves. This novel application made use of datasets from SUA’s YEESI lab<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The conference was a hive of activity, with opportunities for knowledge exchange, networking, and discussions about the future of ICT in Tanzania. It showed the ICT Commission’s commitment to promoting technology, investing in the country’s ICT professionals, and fostering growth and innovation in the field.<\/p>\n
